Two Decades After Genocide, Rwanda 'Country United'

Citizens of Rwanda are marking a somber of anniversary. Twenty years have passed since the genocide that killed more than a million people in the African country.

President Paul Kagame and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon lit a flame at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in honor of those who lost their lives.

"Twenty years ago today our country fell into deep ditches of darkness," Louise Mushikiwabo, Rwanda's minister of foreign affairs, said. "Twenty years later, today, we are a country united and a nation elevated.

Thousands more are remembering the loss at a candlelight ceremony at Kigali's main sports stadium Monday evening.

The 1994 genocide was carried out by extremist Hutus against Tutsis and some moderate Hutus.
