The U.S. government says an American held hostage for about two years in Syria has been released.

National Security Adviser Susan Rice said Peter Theo Curtis of Massachusetts is now safe.

Curtis had been held by an al-Qaeda-linked militant group fighting the Syrian government. The United Nations said it helped with Curtis being turned over to U.N. peacekeepers in Israel.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people attended a mass of remembrance for James Foley, the American journalist who was shown being murdered by ISIS in a web video.

A Roman Catholic bishop said Foley lived his faith by showing the world images of people affected by war.
