The United Nations is warning that western Iraq is facing a critical humanitarian crisis.

The Iraqi government is attempting to regain control of areas overrun by al-Qaeda militants by sending additional troops and military equipment.

They have also carried out airstrikes in an effort to dislodge the terrorists, according to the Associated Press.

But experts say fighting in the Anbar province is likely to worsen as food, water, and medicine are beginning to run out.

Meanwhile, U.N. agencies are preparing medical supplies and food to distribute to remaining residents.

The Unites States has offered help but says they will not send troops to Iraq.
