More than 2,400 people were killed in the Islamic takeover of Iraq in June. That's the highest monthly toll since 2007.

The United Nations says at least 2,417 people were killed in acts of terrorism and violence -- the majority of them civilians. Islamists killed 799 Iraqis in May, again most of them civilians, and 750 in April.

The news comes as ISIS (Islamic State of Syria and Iraq) announced the establishment of a caliphate, ruled by Islamic Sharia law. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a Sunni terrorist, declared himself the caliph, demanding that Muslims worldwide pledge allegiance to him.

Baghdadi and his forces have effectively erased the border between Iraq and Syria, killing opposing forces along the way.

Meanwhile, the United States is sending another 300 troops there, raising the total U.S. troop presence to 750. Their mission will be to increase security at the American embassy and elsewhere in Baghdad and to protect U.S. citizens and property.

The State Department is also temporarily moving some embassy staff in Baghdad to U.S. consulates in Erbil and Basra.
