President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin met informally about the Ukraine crisis at a D-Day commemoration in France Friday.

Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko was also present at the D-Day ceremonies.

In public, Obama and Putin were only together on a split screen. Privately, they spoke face-to-face during a leaders lunch for the first time since the Ukraine crisis began.

Obama told Putin that Russia must recognize Poroshenko as Ukraine's legitimate leader and stop supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Putin also met later with Poroshenko. Kremlin representatives said all three called for a quick end to bloodshed in eastern Ukraine.
