Egypt Court Sentences Brotherhood Members to Death

Nearly 700 members of the Muslim Brotherhood are on trial in Egypt Tuesday, many charged with sabotage and murder. Among the defendants is Mohammed Badie, the group's spiritual leader.

On Monday, 529 Brotherhood supporters were found guilty of a variety of charges -- including inciting violence, attacking and murdering a police officer and inciting the murder of two other officers -- and were sentenced to death. Sixteen defendants were acquitted.

The mass trials are the largest the country has seen.

The sentences stem from violent riots last year by supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Some human rights attorneys said the sentences will be overturned on appeal, but the government's crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, declared a terrorist organization, will continue.
