Lebanon Registers One-Millionth Refugee
Lebanon is now home to more than one million Syrian refugees, that's equivalent to nearly a fourth of the entire Lebanese population.
The United Nations say it's causing a devastating strain on the country.
Nineteen-year-old Yahya, who has asked to be identified only by his first name, was the one-millionth refugee to register in Lebanon.
"I feel sad because this means that one million fled here before me to suffer together," Yahya said as he waited to register with the the United Nations' refugee agency (UNHCR) in the city of Tripoli.
"A million is a big number for Syria and a big number for Lebanon," he added.
As the Syrian civil war continues, refugees are not just fleeing to Lebanon, bordering countries including Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt are also housing those trying to escape the violence.
Yet Lebanon has the highest per-capita concentration of refugees recorded anywhere in the world in recent history, the UNHCR said.
The U.N. says there are more than 2.5 million Syrian refugees and as the number continues to rise, fears of sectarian fighting are spreading across the region.
