Anti-government protests in Ukraine turned violent Sunday, leaving dozens of officers and protestors injured.

Thousands in Kiev, angered by harsh new laws penalizing protestors, hurled rocks and firebombs at police vehicles, prompting police to respond with tear gas and water cannons.

The United States says Ukraine's government is weakening the foundations of its democracy by criminalizing protests.

The protests started about two months ago when Ukraine's president signaled he would seek closer relations with Russia over the European Union.
