A powerful typhoon slammed into the southern coast of China on Friday, killing at least one person.

Typhoon Rammasun killed at least 54 people Thursday in the Philippines.

The storm struck the tropical island of Hainan, located southwest of Hong Kong, with winds as strong as 130 mph.

Before the typhoon hit China, the southern region was already dealing with flooding from heavy rains that killed at least 18 people.

More than 26,000 people were evacuated from Hainan ahead of the storm.

Chinese officials say the typhoon is the most powerful storm in at least nine years.
