Team USA's World Cup soccer hopes are still alive in Brazil, even after a last-second disappointment in last night's showdown with Portugal.

After the first half the United States was down 1 to 0. But early in the second half, Jermaine Jones scored on an amazing strike from 28 yards out to tie the game.

Then in the 81st minute, Clint Dempsey scored to put the United States ahead.

It looked like the United States was heading toward a guaranteed spot in the next round of 16 teams. But with just seconds left in the game, Portugal tied it with a diving header.

The U.S. can still advance to the upcoming knockout round if they beat or tie Germany on Thursday.

"We have one foot in the door," Team USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "Now we're going to walk the second foot in there and get it done."

Even if they lose, the United States could still advance if the other two teams in their group tie or don't score very many goals in their final game, also Thursday.
