Iraqi forces have been stalled battling ISIS in a town west of Baghdad.

Tens of thousands of innocent civilians are trapped in the midst of the battle in the town of Hit, just 85 miles from the capital.

The jihadists don't hesitate to use civilians as human shields to slow the advance of Iraqi troops and interfere with airstrikes by the Iraqi army and some coalition forces. It's the same tactic used by Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Iraq's elite counterterrorism force had to halt the fighting to avoid more civilian casualties. Now they're working to evacuate as many families as possible.
