The man thought to be the driver in the Barcelona van attack was shot dead Monday.

Younes Abouyaaqoub was shot when officers confronted him in a rural suburb about 28 miles west of Barcelona.

"It was a call from a citizen. We checked it out, and ultimately it was the person that had been wanted," Maria Rosell Medall, mayor of San Sadurni de Noya, told reporters. "The police then performed a great intervention and went to catch him."

The 22-year-old was the target of an international manhunt after ramming a van into a crowd killing 13 people and injuring 120 others.

Abouyaaqoub, who was born in Morocco and has Spanish residency, is also suspected of carjacking a man and stabbing him to death as he made a getaway.

A tourist said the terrorist's death brought "total relief."

"So far it's been on my mind that there is still one at large," they said. "So it's great that they have caught him."

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for this attack and other vehicle attacks that took place early Friday in the Spanish region of Catalonia on the coastal town of Cambrils.

Catalonia police believe the terrorist behind these attacks were a part of a 12-member terrorist cell.

Five attackers were killed in Cambrils after a shootout with police and four alleged members of the terror cell appeared in court Tuesday, accusing of being involved in planning the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils.

National Court Judge Fernando Andreu in Madrid will decide whether they should be jailed or released.
