Egyptian Presidential Candidate No Friend of USA

05-17-2012

As Egypt's presidential election nears (May 23-24), Coptic Christians are examining their options.

Which candidate will they support?

While most prefer a secularist over the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi (uninspiring and unlikely to win) or Abul Fotouh (he's supported by the Islamists), some liberals have turned their attention to Nasserist, Hamdeen Sabahi.

Many poor, working class Egyptians support him. They know him as the founder of the Al-Karama Party, which opposed Anwar Sadat and Hosni Mubarak.

But Sabahi is no friend of the United States. This video clip from a 2005 television interview shows him voicing support for Al Qaeda and the murder of American troops in Iraq.

Former Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa has broad support in Egypt and may be elected the country's next president. If some Egyptian Copts are thinking of casting their votes for Sabahi, perhaps they should reconsider.

Moussa or some other candidate may be the better choice if they want improved relations with the United States.
