Church Leader Responds to Measles Outbreak

The number of measles cases is on the rise, as parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children. So far this year there are more than twice the number of cases reported in all of last year.

The dreaded disease, which once killed up to 500 people a year, all but disappeared from the United States when the measles vaccine was introduced. However, the disease is making a disturbing comeback. So far 135 cases have been documented this year.

The most recent outbreak is in a Newark, Texas church, where 25 measles cases have been reported at Eagle Mountain International Church. The church is pastored by Terri Pearsons, who is the daughter of televangelist Kenneth Copeland.

Initial reports indicated Pearsons previously expressed disapproval of the measles vaccine. However, a statement released Wednesday, Aug. 28 clarifies her position.

"In the past several days there has been incorrect or misleading information being reported about Kenneth Copeland Ministries/Eagle Mountain International Church’s (KCM/EMIC) position on vaccines and receiving medical attention. To be clear, KCM/EMIC believes in, and advocates the use of, medical professionals. If an individual is faced with a situation that requires medical attention, that person should seek out the appropriate medical professional and follow their instructions using wisdom. As an example of KCM/EMIC’s commitment to the importance of the medical profession in the healing process, KCM/EMIC provides its employees with an onsite medical clinic staffed by an MD and a CMA, a first-rate health insurance program, and has sponsored onsite vaccination clinics.

Kenneth Copeland Ministries’ stated their position dealing with any medical conditions in a statement dated Aug 21 which read, "First seek the wisdom of God, His Word, and appropriate medical attention from a professional that you know and trust. Apply wisdom and discernment in carrying out their recommendations for treatment. This would include: vaccinations, immunizations, surgeries, prescriptions, or any other medical procedures. By faith we are standing on the Word of God. When standing for healing there are natural steps as well as spiritual steps to take."
