Mark Burnett: NBC's "A.D." Is "'Game of Thrones' Meets 'The Bible'"

A new ‘first look’ video for NBC’s A.D. The Bible Continues, featuring behind-the-scenes footage and executive producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, released this week. Touting the premiere of the upcoming series, the three-minute video takes viewers to Morocco and onto the show’s ‘ancient Jerusalem’ sets. We also get to meet and hear from some of the diverse cast as they share what it’s been like stepping back into time.

In the video, Burnett sums up his new show as “Game of Thrones meets The Bible”. Those are enticing words, indeed, as Game of Thrones, the HBO hit based on George R.R. Martin’s medieval fantasy epic, is full of grand drama. Matching the critically acclaimed intensity of Game of Thrones with the beloved stories of the Bible, now that could be something.

The comparison is also a reminder that, at times, Burnett and Downey’s The Bible beat out The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, attracting more than an average of 10 million viewers per episode, according to Christianity Today. Since The Bible first aired on HISTORY in 2013, about 100 million viewers have witnessed their scripture-based miniseries. The husband-wife producing team is hoping to keep the momentum going with a look at what happens with the disciples after Jesus’ crucifixion.

This new video also clues us in on the tone of A.D. The Bible Continues.

“Fueled by the Roman oppression, these will be the darkest days after the death and betrayal of Jesus,” says Downey.

Hoping to give viewers a glimpse of what it was like to be a follower of Jesus during those early days, Burnett has set out to share “a story of history, which shaped nations, shaped laws in the most dramatic, crazy times.”

A.D. The Bible Continues is set to premiere this Easter Sunday, April 5, on NBC, at 9 p.m. ET.
