Risen's Resolute Message: "There Is a Light…There Is a Second Chance"

Director Kevin Reynolds, Joseph Fiennes and Tom Felton in Risen

Risen's lead actor Joseph Fiennes, whom audiences may know from 1998 Oscar winner Shakespeare in Love, takes "great joy" in retelling the greatest story ever told from a fresh perspective.

Following the direction of filmmaker Kevin Reynolds, Risen looks at Jesus' crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension through the lens of a non-believer, a Roman commander named Clavius (Fiennes). That's not to say this Affirm Films project seeks to rewrite the Bible. Quite the contrary is true, according to Fiennes.

"The unique thing about Risen is that it allows the wider community of cinemagoers and faith-based audiences to come together," says Fiennes. "It's not actually a revisionist idea of a biblical story. It is, in many ways, deeply respectful and fairly conversative. But, at the same time, I think what I'm really excited by is that it's cinematic. Kevin Reynolds has produced and directed, along with his team, a film which serves up great entertainment with great respect. And so I hope that it will satisfy the wider audience of those who love entertainment in cinema, and also the Word."

Fiennes, whose first foray into "faith" films had him in the role of reformation leader Martin Luther, says making Risen was quite the experience...

Though Risen is set more than 2,000 years ago, Clavius' hunt for Jesus Christ has a message for us today. Fiennes says it's one that will inspire moviegoers that though we face darkness in this world, "there is a light; there is a second chance"...
