Brave Fishermen Rescue Flood Victims

In Kerala, India, when incessant rains caused the worst flooding in 99 years, fishermen used their boats to rescue people from their homes.

One fisherman, Harees explained, “Everyone’s houses were submerged in the water, and people were crying out to us to save them.”

Harees and other fishermen rescued more than 5,000 people, but in the process, many of their boats were damaged beyond repair.

Harees said, “We were not on the sea, which we know very well. We took our boats into flooded streets and neighborhoods. We didn’t know what was underneath us, and the boats hit debris here and there as we rescued people.”

Harees and his family found that the flood had destroyed everything in their home. CBN reached out with medical and relief supplies.

Harees’ wife, Shahida said, “CBN came and gave us utensils, food supplies, and other things, so we can start over.”

When we found out about the brave fishermen losing their boats rescuing their neighbors, we knew we had to help them get back to work.

Harees explained, “When CBN gave us boats, it brought hope to all of us. Not just me. The boats are big, so four or five families share each one.”

Thanks to CBN, the fishermen are able to feed their families.

“Now, we can go out to sea and earn a living again,” said Harees. “We are all so thankful to CBN.”
