Faith-Based Film 'Hacksaw Ridge' Up for Six Academy Awards

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson's "Hacksaw Ridge" is up for six nominations, including one for Gibson as best director. The announcement came just days after his ninth child was born.

"What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son!" Gibson said in a statement about his nomination.

Watch Mel Gibson's candid sit-down interview with CBN's Wendy Griffith and find out why many believe "Hacksaw Ridge" is his "big comeback."

"Hacksaw Ridge" is based on the heroic true story of Desmond Doss. He was a man of faith who joined the military during World War II, but he refused to carry a weapon. Doss managed to save 75 men from the battlefield, and he became the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor.

Gibson says the film made him learn things about his faith. "I read this script and saw somebody like Desmond Doss and it made me painfully aware of how scant my own faith is," Gibson told CBN's Wendy Griffith when asked how his personal faith affects the movies and roles he chooses.

"Hacksaw Ridge" is available for digital download Feb. 7 and heads to DVD and Blu-Ray Feb. 21.
