Ted Cruz to Brody File: 'I believe Republicans can win a majority of the Senate in 2014'

In a one-on-one interview at his home in Houston, Texas, Sen. Ted Cruz tells the Brody File that he believes, “Republicans can win a majority of the Senate in 2014.”

He also says he will be able to maintain his credibility with the Tea Party and work as Vice-Chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

This interview was done this past Friday at Cruz’s home in Houston. An upcoming profile on Cruz and his family will be seen on "The 700 Club" in February. It will include an interview with his wife and video of his children. Cruz is also the newsmaker in this week’s Brody File shot on location in San Antonio, Texas.

David Brody: This is going to be an interesting balance for you because you are a TEA Party, Constitutionally conservative guy, and yet, you’re also now the Vice Chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee so you have potential competing interests here. How are you going to maneuver that minefield?

Sen. Ted Cruz: I think it’s very harmonious. In the next two years, I intend to focus, number one, on winning the battles, doing as much as we can to shrink the size of government, to shrink the debt, to get economic growth growing. Now, that may prove very challenging with a Democratic Senate and a Democratic president.

Number two, I intend to focus on winning the argument, making the case to the American people that freedom works. That if you want greater opportunity, government control of the economy is not the answer.

But number three, critical to that is in making the argument: winning elections.Margaret Thatcher famously said, “First you win the argument, then you win the election.”

In 2014, there will be Senate races all over the country that I think are critically important. I believe Republicans can win a majority of the Senate in 2014. It’s not going to be easy, but I think it’s possible. If we stand together, if we stand for principle, I think we can take a majority of the Senate, and I think, taking a majority of the Senate is an important step to being able to advance these principles, to being able to shrink the size and power of government, to shrink the debt and to get economic growth growing.
