Huckabee Meets the Press

01-17-2008

I write this blog from the swanky Capitol Hill Club in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. It's so swanky that I had to be ushered through the back door because I was wearing jeans and management didn't want to upset the patrons. At that point I told them that I should go through the restaurant the regular way because I was The Brody File. They said "who"? I repeated again with emphasis that I was The Brody File. They then gave me a blank stare and said "so what".

Now to the story at hand. Mike Huckabee was greeted by about 50 members of the national media. The questions came fast and furious (even though there were only about 10 asked before the wrap).

Huckabee continued to denounce the push polls that are being made in support of him down here in South Carolina. He says he's done all he can and admits the controversy has probably hurt him in the state.

He took the push poll question and turned it into a complaint about McCain/Feingold campaign finance reform as he tried to link these groups to it.

There were a few tense exchanges especially when Jonathan Martin from The Politico asked Huckabee whether he thought John McCain was a Washington insider. After repeated attempts, the Governor would not answer the qustion.

He just wouldn't go there. By not attacking McCain, Huckabee can claim that he's taking the high road and may be angling for a VP slot but it may cost him South Carolina and possibly the nomination if he decides to lay off McCain entirely.
