The Exit Polls in Nevada

01-19-2008

News Flash:  Mormons went for Mitt Romney in Nevada. I know it's a shock but it's true.

And women helped Hillary Clinton in Nevada. The Associated Press breaks down the exit poll information here,. But here is some interesting exit poll information from the AP:

About a quarter of Nevada GOP voters were Mormon, and virtually all of them preferred Mitt Romney. Overall, about half of Romney's Nevada votes came from Mormons. Among non-Mormons, he had a slight lead over Ron Paul. National polls have shown that Romney's Mormon religion is a problem for significant numbers of Republican voters. Romney and Mike Huckabee were doing best among white born-again and evangelical Christians.

People calling themselves Republicans dominated the Nevada GOP caucuses, and they overwhelmingly preferred Romney. Independents just as heavily picked Paul. Conservatives also were in the majority, and they picked Romney. Moderates were more evenly divided between Romney, John McCain and Paul.

The economy and immigration were the issues most on the minds of Nevada Republicans, and Romney won with both groups.

The Women are back behind Clinton. Nearly half supported Clinton compared to a third who supported Obama. That's a decisive margin because nearly six in 10 Nevada Democrats at the caucuses were female. Obama edged Clinton among women in Iowa, but she came back and dominated them in New Hampshire.

Hillary Rodham Clinton had the biggest portion of people calling themselves Democrats, and they dominated the caucuses. Independents - normally a Barack Obama strength - made up a small fraction of voters, and Clinton and Obama split them evenly.

Clinton also had a slight lead among liberals, who are core Democratic voters and have usually been an Obama strong point. The two were running closer among moderates.

Half of Nevada Democrats named the economy as the most significant problem, making it their overwhelming choice as the country's top issue. Nearly half of them favored Clinton, compared to a third who chose Obama. Clinton also led among those citing health care as the top problem, while she and Obama split the vote of those who picked the Iraq war.
