What About Huckabee?

02-02-2008

Am I not supposed to mention that Mike Huckabee is still in this race? This is a John McCain coronation right? Well, Huckabee is still around. He could do very well in some of these southern states on February 5th. You know how we are here at The Brody File right? We give it to you straight. Well, here's a little straight talk: (I had to borrow that line). If you took all the Evangelicals in this country who care mostly about the abortion and marriage issue, I would dare say that Mike Huckabee could very well be the Republican nominee. But it's a false argument.

First of all, many Evangelicals simply don't vote. So Huckabee has a problem right there. Secondly, even if all Evangelicals did vote, their votes are more complicated than JUST abortion and gay marriage. My point though is don't underestimate the number of Evangelicals that care only about those cultural issues and base their vote on them. This is a major part of Huckabee's appeal.

Anyhow, I know the Huckabee haters out there say he doesn't have the whole package and some of it is not all that conservative. But don't be surprised if Huckabee does better than expected on February 5th. To say Huckabee won in Iowa only because of Evangelicals isn't the whole story. The reason he won is because he had six months to convince voters that he is the right man for the job. The more people got to know him, the more they realized that he was more than a one hit Evangelical wonder. The problem for Huckabee is that without a boatload of money, he had less time to connect with the voters in New Hampshire and even South Carolina. That's why it was probably a good move by Huckabee to campaign only part time in Florida and instead concentrate heavily in the South where voters can really get to know him
