Winning Delegates

02-05-2008

Hillary Clinton's campaign is spinning her win tonight in Massachusetts as the "upset of the night." See below their talking points:

Despite the fact that Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry were actively supporting and campaigning for Obama, Hillary Clinton won the state.

Despite the fact that the Governor of Massachusetts endorsed Obama, Hillary Clinton won the state.

Despite the fact that Obama visited Massachusetts just last night, Hillary Clinton won the state.

This is a strong victory and shows that Hillary Clinton has strength in places where Barack Obama was expected to win.

It's important to remember here that this race IS NOT about winning states. It's about winning delegates which means, on the Democratic side, if a candidate wins a state, they really need to rack up a large margin of victory to rack in delegates. Remember, on the democratic side, the delegates are divided proportionally, not winner take at all.

It's interesting how the crowd reacts when the TV screens here show Hillary winning a state. Campaign handlers know that's not the entire story.
