Senator Jim DeMint tells The Brody File that the problem with the GOP today is that the Republican leadership has moved to the left. He's just trying to make a course correction.

DeMint spoke with me and you can watch his powerful comments below. However first a little background.

If conservative Tea Party type candidates start beating GOP backed candidates in the 2010 primaries, Senator Jim DeMint is going to get heaps of credit and his national standing and power will increase dramatically because he's the guy who's using his Senate influence and money early on to back these conservative candidates. A new Rasmussen poll shows the generic Tea Party candidate beats the generic Republican candidate in a primary. Some say he'll be Kingmaker" if all this comes to fruition. Remember, DeMint's endorsement not only carries weight because he's a U.S. Senator but he has money to burn too. His "Senate Conservatives Fund PAC" dishes out money to conservative candidates around the country as well. It's a classic political double shot. Watch him below with a transcription that follows.

Senator Jim DeMint:  “I’m not trying to be Kingmaker.”

Senator Jim DeMint:“When they say they would rather have a Tea Party than a Republican what they’re telling us is they want some changes and they want some people to stand up for principles and in this case they want us to show some passion and even some anger about what’s going on and I think there are many Republicans out there across the country who are willing to step into that role and we just need to give them a shot so the Senate Conservatives Fund…is just there to encourage those alternative candidates out there who are what I consider mainstream Americans. The problem here in the Republican Party is not that our base has gone to the right. The problem in the Republican Party is that the leadership has gone to the left and the tea parties and the Republicans out across the country are right there where American principles have always been and I’m trying to pull the party back to the mainstream of where America really is.”
