Todd Akin for President?

Maybe Todd Akin should run for president of the United States because he clearly has the power to bring liberals and conservatives together.

Todd Akin is staying in the Missouri Senate race…for now. You get the sense that the GOP drumbeat will be too much at some point to where he will have to get out. The money may dry up and his supporters may, too. His poll numbers may start to dip too low as well.

But for now, he’s staying in and getting some support from the Family Research Council. Here is the statement just put out by their president Tony Perkins:

"Congressman Akin's comments over the weekend were inappropriate and indefensible. However, despite Congressman Akin's poor choice of words, we continue to support him in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Our support is based not upon one statement, but rather a lifetime of service.??"I have known Congressman Akin for nearly a decade. My personal experience with Todd along with his record make clear his compassion and commitment for the sanctity of life, the foundation of the family and the well-being of all Americans."

The Democratic Party is going to hang the Akin controversy around the GOP’s neck from now until Election Day. Having said that, even if Akin gets out of the race, the damage has been done. He has already given Democrats fresh ammunition in their war against women narrative.

If Akin were to get out of the race, the 24/7 cable talk might subside but the campaign ads accusing Republicans of waging this war against women won’t.

Then again, what if Akin actually still wins in Missouri? Then Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, and all the GOP bigwigs won’t be complaining one bit since they would have just unseated Democrat Claire McCaskill.

Does Akin then become a hero? Ahh politics…what a circus.
