Only His Children Ate

Santos became a single parent of three after his wife passed away from cancer.  8-year-old Andrea is the oldest.  “One day my dad did not have food to give us, only one dollar in his pocket,” she recalled.  “He bought tortillas and bread, but only the kids ate.  He didn’t eat.”

Santos had sold everything to pay for his wife’s medical care.  Now the family of 4 was forced to move around, looking for a place to stay and for Santos to work.

“He always takes us with him so we are safe,” Andrea said.

“When someone wanted to hire me to work in the field,” added Santos, “I said, ‘I have to take my children with me because I cannot leave them alone.’”

Santos finally found a place to live in exchange for caring for the landowner’s house and cow.  But he needed a more steady income for food, and medicine for his children.

After Operation Blessing met the family, we gave them some emergency food.  Then we built them a chicken coop and gave them 200 hundred chickens to raise and sell.

“They gave me a chicken farm! I couldn’t believe it,” exclaimed Santos.

“I help him to feed the chickens and give them water,” added Andrea.

“I now make a hundred to a hundred and fifty dollars a month from the chicken farm,” Santos said proudly.

“He sells the chickens, and that means we can shop for food!” said Andrea.  “We’re not hungry anymore.  Since Operation Blessing brought this chicken business we feel so happy-- and we also give thanks to God (while pointing toward the sky).
