Racing Against Black Mold

When Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on Texas, Peggy and her three children found themselves stranded in the floodwaters.

Peggy says, “And at that point there was no other way out but a boat and so that’s how we were rescued.”

Peggy is a single mom who just wanted to give her kids stability, but she wasn’t even able to get back to their home for days.

With tears, she shares, “When I walked into my house for the first time, I was tromping through water looking around at what used to be our family’s home, and it looked like someone had took our house and shook it upside down and set it back down.”

While it was hard for Peggy and her two daughters, it was especially difficult for her son, Gabe, who has autism.

“He is a lovely little boy,” Peggy says. “He stood tall, was brave, and watched all of his things go out to the road, and helped me every single day.”

It was a race against time.

Peggy says, “Every day the mold grew more and more and more. We could not work fast enough, so that every day that we went back there was more things ruined.”

They were left with no other option but to live in a donated shed as they tried to save their home on their own.

Through tears, Peggy said, “Where do you go from here? How do you recover from that?”

That’s when Operation Blessing came to their rescue!

“Without the help of Operation Blessing I don’t know where I would be,” Peggy says.

Volunteers pulled out all of the moldy sheetrock and insulation, but the Rambs had no idea just how much Operation Blessing had in store. We moved the family into a hotel while we worked on their home. After a few weeks away, the Rambs came home for the surprise of a lifetime.

“To go through a door that had a new beginning and a brand new start for my family, a place that we can all be together as a family, there’s no words to explain that,” Peggy says.

Operation Blessing had a special surprise in store for Gabe: his very own bed, something he had never had before.

Peggy says, “I am so very grateful to be able to bring my children home, and for them to know that they are safe, and, because of Operation Blessing, now I am able to give that to my children.”

Peggy’s daughter Payton shares, “There’s not words to describe how thankful I am to the volunteers and Operation Blessing.”

Through tears, Peggy said, “From the top of my head to the soles of my feet, I am grateful for everything that everyone has done for me and my children.”
