Experience a Life Beyond Amazing

THE NINEFOLD FRUIT
Dr. Jeremiah says it is important to develop character within us in this difficult time in which we live.  “Our lives are not based on our circumstances,” says Dr. Jeremiah.  “It’s based on the reality within us. If we are not real, if we are not genuine, then every situation around us will be an issue for us.”  He reminds us that the qualities we need to develop are listed in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  Dr. Jeremiah says our world needs solid-to-the-core people and believes God wants us to be people of love, joy and peace.  “The qualities of a life beyond amazing are produced within us by the Holy Spirit,” he says.  While everyone around us may be talking about their problems, Dr. Jeremiah says it is up to us to be the people who handle those problems.  These nine qualities require commitment and effort, but will transform our lives if we take them seriously. “God has given us everything we need for life and godliness,” says Dr. Jeremiah.  “The rest is up to us.”

SOME OF THE FRUIT
Love.  Love is a complex word and while many people are obsessed with it, rarely do we witness or hear what love truly is.  Dr. Jeremiah reminds us that love is not about what we feel for others; it’s about what we do for others. “We love others with the same love with which we ourselves have been loved,” he says.  Once Dr. Jeremiah inadvertently cut off a woman in the line at a drive thru near his church.  She rolled down the window and started cursing at her.  When Dr. Jeremiah reached the pick-up window, he paid for the woman’s meal behind him.  “I don’t know if she felt better, but I know I did,” he says.  Loving people is a decision and then we do good things for them because that’s how to express love.  Dr. Jeremiah says we learn to love one loving act at a time. “The reality is for most of us is that we go through life putting out 25 cents here and 50 cents there,” Dr. Jeremiah says. “Giving our life to Christ isn’t glorious; it’s done in little acts of love, 25 cents at a time.”

Compassion. This is a concept based on the story of the good Samaritan where by the good Samaritan took care of the wounded man and since that time, he made his nationality forever synonymous with kindness and good works.  “When it comes to compassion, sometimes God intends for us to answer our own prayers in that moment,” says Dr. Jeremiah who reminds us that sometimes compassion costs us time; sometimes it costs us more. After a 2003 cedar fire which destroyed more than 2,300 homes and incinerated more than 280,000 acres just above his church, Dr. Jeremiah and his congregation took care of the neaby community that lost everything for six weeks.  True compassion doesn’t weigh the cost first; it simply responds to human suffering with loving kindness.

Humility. “Humility is not thinking about yourself, but thinking of others,” says Dr. Jeremiah.  Humility uses the resources and power we possess for the good of others,  “You can’t talk about humility without talking about serving others,” he says.  When you are humble, spending your mental energy on others rather than yourself makes it easier to find humor in things you would have previously found intolerable.  Dr. Jeremiah was speaking at the 2017 inaugural prayer service at the National Cathedral.  When it was his turn to read Romans 5:1-8, the person before him took the book from the pulpit!  He hadn’t memorized it and was standing before the watching world.  “I felt as if my whole life were passing before my eyes,” he says.  Fortunately one of Dr. Jeremiah’s friends handed him a Bible to which he began fumbling through the pages and read the passage with as much authority as his trembling voice allowed.  His 12-year-old granddaughter said, Poppy, for a preacher, it sure took you a long time to find Romans in your Bible!  Dr. Jeremiah says God wants us to stay humble.
