Holy in a Hookup World

HOOKING UP
Ashley grew up in a Christian home and gave her life to the Lord when she was 11 years old.  When she went to college, Ashley began listening to her peers.  Physical intimacy was acceptable: kissing, sleeping around with friends or even strangers was considered the norm on her college campus.  “Deep down, I knew it wasn’t right,” she says.  “I was dating to date and was expecting God to plop my husband down in front of me.”  Then Ashley opened her eyes.  “I got to the point where I said, I can’t do this anymore,” she says.  “I can’t be physically intimate and dating guys when I know they’re not the people I’m supposed to be with.”  After breaking up with her boyfriend, Ashley decided to give dating a break.  “God started convicting me,” she says. “And I decided to be abstinate.”  Though she still dated around without becoming physically involved, Ashley says she found herself in the same cycle.  Three years ago, she read Mo Isom’s book, “Wreck My Life,” where Mo went on a one-year intimacy fast calling it “Kissless 'til Christmas.”  That’s when Ashley decided to develop a more meaningful relationship and a monogamous one with the Lord.  “I learned so much about being content,” she says.  “I was always anxious.  I always had this expectation that life doesn’t start until you’re married.”  Ashley says her thought process came from her mom and sister finding their spouses earlier in life.

“I was always seeking, not soaking,” says Ashley.  “You are not guaranteed a spouse. Christ is enough.  Now I tell people, Don’t listen to the world.  It’s not beneficial. And it is possible to start today.  Unhook from the world and hook yourself to the Word.” Today she is single and thriving.  “I am in a place of contentment.  I am still believing that the Lord will bless me with the desires of my heart, but I’m not trying to force it.  The Lord had to do a work in me.  I have good days and bad days.  But I had to surrender my anxiousness to the Lord and to the plans He has for me.”

UNHOOKED
CBN started a campaign revolving around the concept of what it means to be a Christian single in today’s culture.  Ashley says about a year ago, Gordon asked her and another producer to write some comedy scripts.  Ashley’s comedy was based on a conversation she had with Gordon about being on a dating fast.  She put together a production with her talking to her parents played by local actors.  Gordon thought it would be a good idea to start a campaign to help other single Christians to stay holy in a hookup culture.
