“I was so worried my grandchildren would starve.”

Grandma Amporn and her husband have been raising their four grandchildren ever since their mother abandoned them. “I love my grandchildren,” Grandma told CBN. “I would never send them to an orphanage. I want to take care of them and raise them well. I would do anything for them!”

Grandma helped bring in a little extra money by selling toast to her neighbors for pennies a slice. Grandpa worked at the docks part-time and earned about $13 a day. Combined, it hasn’t been enough to buy food and pay the bills for the family of six. Soon they found themselves thirteen-hundred dollars in debt!

“Again and again we had to borrow money from our neighbors and from the store,” said Grandma. “The interest on our loans kept adding up. I was so stressed. Every day was a struggle.”

When their village was locked down during the pandemic, Grandpa couldn’t go to work. When they got down to their last can of fish, Grandma mixed it with a little rice for 10-year-old Net and his siblings.

“I was hungry, but we had to share just a little fish. I did not feel full. I wished we had fried eggs and meat,” said Net.

“I said, ‘I’m sorry, this is all we have.’ They didn’t cry or ask for more. I was so worried that my grandchildren would starve,” added Grandma.

On two different occasions, CBN’s Orphan’s Promise brought food packs to the family with rice, eggs, fish, noodles and milk. We also covered the cost of their utilities for two months, until Grandpa could return to work.

“When we got the food packs, Grandma fried eggs and meat for us to eat. I felt very happy!” declared Net.

When the restrictions eased, we helped Grandma expand her business by providing a food stand, umbrella and food to sell.  We also trained her how to manage that small business. By the end of one year, Grandma was able to pay off their thirteen-hundred dollar debt!

“It feels good to be free from debt! I am filled with peace,” she said. “Orphan’s Promise empowered me to build my business and take care of my grandchildren. Now, our family has a better life!”

“Thank you for helping us!” added Net with a big smile.
