In this film, while Santa is leaving toys at an orphanage one Christmas Eve, a baby named Buddy sneaks into his bag and is raised at the North Pole by the elves. The comedy intensifies when Buddy leaves the North Pole to find his real father. His pure innocence faces the intense realities of New York City.
Veteran actor Bob Newhart plays Buddys adoptive elf father. I spoke with him about the importance of wholesome family entertainment.
I told Bob it was a blast to see a funny, laugh-out-loud, pure family film."
Bob said to me, "Its wonderful to be a part of this. Its just a wonderful feeling, and my wife keeps saying, Im so glad you did this. Im so glad.'"
I asked Bob what he thought families would like most about Elf.
"I think that they can both enjoy it on a different level," Bob explained. "I went to a screening and I brought my granddaughters, who are 31/2 and 7, and my daughters, who are 26 and 32. I dont know who laughed more. I think my daughters laughed more. They just thoroughly enjoyed it. And my wife, also, she thoroughly enjoyed it. I think its going to be that kind of movie."
In his leading role, Will Ferrell captures an unbelievable innocence that makes the audience laugh out loud.
"It was really kind of a fun character to play," says Will, "just because I always knew that this character really doesnt have any filters, really doesnt have any bias, and really kind of views the world through the eyes of a child, in a sense."
Elf is rated PG for mildly rude humor and language.
