Relief for South Carolina Flood Victims

COLUMBIA, South Carolina - High tides, strong winds and torrential rainfall has left its mark on several cities with Columbia, South Carolina, receiving 25 inches of rain in certain areas and experiencing unprecedented flooding.

As the waters begin to recede, Operation Blessing's U.S. Disaster Relief teams are on the ground in Columbia, meeting with local officials, assessing the damage and determining the greatest areas of need. The team also connected with regional church partners and local residents.

The team's convoy of vehicles is already stationed at Christian Life Church in Columbia and includes a high tech mobile command center with computers and communications equipment; a mobile kitchen that is capable of serving up to 2,000 meals a day; a dehumidifier trailer equipped with moisture meters, commercial dehumidifiers, fans, and blowers to dry out flooded homes and two construction trailers packed full of tools and equipment to support volunteer operations.

Other support vehicles in the convoy include tractor trailers and box trucks containing bottled water, thousands of MRE meals, tools, protective equipment and additional food items.

When it is safe to re-enter flooded areas, teams of OBI volunteers will be sent out to help residents salvage their belongings, gut their homes and remove debris.

Operation Blessing is also asking local officials and pastors what their greatest needs are and how OBI teams can help meet those needs. Right now, there is a resounding need for water, as more than 40,000 residents are without safe drinking water and it is unknown when water services will be restored. To meet this urgent need, Operation Blessing is coordinating truckloads of water to be transported to areas desperate for potable water and connecting with long-time partner Water Missions International.

In the days ahead, Operation Blessing staff and volunteers will provide much-needed hope and help to devastated flood victims.
