Fox Guarding the Hen House

There is a saying in America, "leaving the fox in charge of the hen house."  It means installing a natural enemy to guard his prey.  This leaves the prey vulnerable to the fox's appetite for chickens.

You're not going to believe this...after years of international pressure and the attention of several Hollywood stars to stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has promoted Musa Hilal, an alleged Janjaweed militia commander, to a key job in his government!

The Washington Post reports Bashir is defending his appointment saying that Hilal "contributed greatly to stability and security in the region."

Uh, huh.

Let me get this straight, a man is convicted and jailed for killing innocent people in Darfur and for this he gets a promotion?  You really need to read this Washington Post article.  It's unbelievable!  The Post reports...

On Sunday, Human Rights Watch condemned Hilal as the "poster child for Janjaweed atrocities in Darfur," saying his assignment is a "slap in the face to Darfur victims and the U.N. Security Council."

Further down in the article, it cites John Prendergast of the Enough Project.  He says, "bringing Hilal to the presidential palace is like throwing a skunk into the garden party and watching how the guests react."

That's putting it mildly.

While the world's attention is focused on Sudan's neighbor, Kenya, to the south, I guess Bashir thought he could slip Hilal in without much fanfare.

Oops.  Too late.
