VidAngel Fights Disney in Court for Right to Exist

VidAngel, a service that provides users with movies filtered for explicit content, is fighting back in court after Disney sued to shut the company down.

In documents filed Monday night, the company calls Disney a "bully."

"Disney is no victim. It is a bully that, acting in concert with other powerful companies, has long engaged in an unlawful effort to block any online filtering services," VidAngel's court documents state.

VidAngel argues that Disney and other studios are trying to sabotage their business by forcing them to get permission to offer a filtering service.

"According to Disney, VidAngel is a copyright pirate," the company continues. "Like many of its movies, however, Disney's story is pure fantasy."

VidAngel says that according to a law passed by the U.S. Congress in 2005, the Family Home Movie Act (FMA), they do not need consent to filter content.

"The FMA authorizes for-profit companies such as VidAngel to stream lawfully purchased movies for home viewing with objectionable content filtered out," the company's court document contends.

The case is expected to head to court in October.
