Devon Franklin Breaks Down 'The Truth About Men' at a Time When Masculinity is Considered Toxic

Pastor, author and "Breakthrough" producer Devon Franklin is shifting the culture's dialogue about manhood in his new upcoming book The Truth About Men: What Men and Women Need to Know.

The book draws upon Franklin's own struggles as a man and explains how his faith has shaped his understanding of what it means to be a godly father, husband and son.

"Franklin provides a manual for how men can change, on both a personal and societal level by providing practical solutions for helping men learn how to resist temptation, how to practice self-control and how to love," the book's online summary reads.

Franklin is an outspoken Christian and has written on the topics of love, abstinence and marriage before. However, he says this book is different.

"The Truth About Men in the realest thing I've ever written because it's the most transparent," he said in a recent Instagram post. "Sometimes as men, we don't want to talk. So many of us –– we suffer in silence. That's one of the biggest truths about men. Most people don't realize how much pain we actually go through. And what I realize is that sometimes most men that are in pain, inflict pain. It's an emotional pain sometimes –– a spiritual pain."

Franklin says that pain can turn men into "dogs" who mistreat women.

"Because we are not acknowledging what we're going through we sometimes perpetuate it even to those we love the most," he explained. "Too often we treat women like they're conquests to our achievement versus understanding and treating them like the women and the humans that God has created them to be. I do believe as men we can do better, we can be better, and truth be told –– we can stop acting like dogs."

"So part of how I talk about how to learn, how to love is how to love ourselves flaws and all," he continued. "And I do think, and I do know that by acknowledging that we have this lust in us, it's the first step to love ourselves as we are."

"I believe that every man is in a dog fight. There's this fight between our higher self, the self we want to be, and our lower animal self. And that fight, no man is exempt to, me included. The dog hungers for vice, money, power, sex and greed. It covets success. It thrives off instant gratification," he says in another video.

"Here's the truth: The dog hates monogamy. The dog hates being patient. Women, you are not the problem. This is not a book about what women need to do better. This a book about what we've got to do better," he added.

Franklin believes if men "tame" their inner dog and become godly men, it will benefit society as a whole.

"The health and well-being of our society is directly linked to how we date. If we date better, then we marry better. If we marry better, then we parent better. If we parent better, then we 'family' better. And a healthy family is the foundation of a healthy society," he wrote in an Instagram post.

Franklin says his book isn't just for men; it's for women, too.

"Too often as women you don't have the information, enough information about what's going on with us," he said.

The Truth About Men: What Men and Women Need to Know will be released Feb. 5. It is available for pre-order now.
