The DASH diet has been rated the best for overall health for the fourth year in a row by U.S. News and World Report.
A panel of health and nutrition experts rated 32 diets for weight loss, nutritional completeness, and disease prevention.
DASH, which stands for "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension," came out on top. The diet is low in fat and cholesterol and focuses on fruits, vegetables, and low-fat or fat-free dairy.
It includes less sugar, red meat, and sugary beverages than the typical American diet and it's rich in whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds and nuts.
DASH also encourages a low-sodium diet. The average American consumes about 3,400 mg a day, but DASH recommends no more than a daily dose of 2,300 mg of sodium. In other words, less than a teaspoon of salt.
