'Spectacular' Blood Moon Eclipse Enthralls Millions

Millions of early risers Wednesday managed to catch the second blood moon lunar eclipse of the year.

The moon appears orange or red because of the sunlight in the atmosphere, hence the name "blood moon."

Astronomer Geoff Wyatt at the Sydney Observatory in Australia called Wednesday's lunar event "very spectacular."

Single blood moons happen fairly regularly, but it's extremely rare for four of them to appear so closely together.

There will be two more in the year ahead, with the next scheduled to take place April 4, 2015.

Some biblical observers have noted a link between the appearance of blood moons throughout history and important events in the Middle East - specifically Israel.
