Ebola Virus: The Facts You Need to Know


As the deadly Ebola virus gains more attention around the globe, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning Americans to avoid travel to some West African nations.

The CDC has sent more than 20 staffers to West Africa to help control the outbreak and plans to send 50 more to assist in screening passengers.

Stateside, Border Patrol agents and CDC staffers are on the lookout for people displaying signs of the illness.

Here are some things to consider while traveling the rest of this summer:

  • The virus is transmitted through direct contact by blood or other body fluids. It is not airborne.
  • It has a 60 percent fatality rate.
  • The death toll for this outbreak is at 900 and climbing.
  • There is currently no vaccine or cure.
  • Treatment is experimental.
