JERUSALEM, Israel -- The IDF demolished the homes of two Arabs awaiting trial for murdering five Israelis on the same day last November.

Home demolitions have proven an effective deterrent, despite what critics say is unfair punishment of the terrorists' families.

The first home belonged to Raed Khalil bin Mahmoud, 36, from the village of Dura near Hebron, who confessed to murdering two Israelis (Reuven Aviram, 51, and Aharon Yesiav, 32) in a stabbing attack outside a synagogue in a Tel Aviv high-rise office building. The Tel Aviv District court indicted him for murder.

The second demolition took place in Dir Smat, an Arab village on the outskirts of Hebron, to the home belonging to Mohammed Abded al-Basad, 24.

In a drive-by shooting on the same day, Basad emptied his automatic rifle on passengers near the Jewish community of Alon Shvut, before ending his terror spree with a vehicular attack.

Basad killed American Ezra Schwartz, 18; Israeli teacher Yaakov Don, 49; and Palestinian Arab Shadi Arafeh, 24.

Meanwhile, IDF troops took 19 suspected terrorists into custody overnight Monday, including three Hamas members. Israeli forces confiscated weapons-manufacturing equipment, along with handguns, ammunition, knives and other paraphernalia.
