Israeli Arab Family Wants to Return to Israel After Year with ISIS

JERUSALEM, Israel -- An Israeli Arab family that joined ISIS in Syria more than a year ago seems to have decided that Israel might not be such a bad place after all.

Last June, the family -- including the mother, father and their three children -- went to visit a relative in Romania, continued on to Turkey and then crossed the border into Syria, according to reports in Ha'aretz and the Jerusalem Post.

Family members of the five opposed the move and tried to convince them to return to Israel.  They reported the situation to Israeli authorities.  The woman's father went to meet the family in Turkey as they were on their way back, but they were arrested by Turkish police after they left Syria.

It's not clear if Turkish police will release them to return to Israel.

Residents of their hometown Sakhnin, in northern Israel, were reportedly shocked to learn the family joined ISIS.  They were quoted by the Israeli daily Ma'ariv as saying that the family owned a business and was on good terms with everyone.

It's not the first time Israeli Arabs have joined up with Islamic State, but it's apparently the first time an entire family has done so.
