JERUSALEM, Israel – Following a fourth year of below-average winter rains, the Sea of Galilee, Israel's sole source of sweet water, has dropped to its lowest level since the 1920s, when scientists began measuring the lake's water depth, the national water authority, Mekorot, said in a report published this week.

With winter rains nearing an end, the water level rose only 22 cm, way below the average of 60 cm, leaving a serious deficit of available water volume over the long, dry summer.

Another complicating factor is the expectation that water shortages in the north of the country will be worse this summer.

At the beginning of March, the water level is 16 cm below the red line, the report said.
