JERUSALEM, Israel – The terrorist killed earlier this week after opening fire on Israeli soldiers and attempting to infiltrate Israel has been identified as a nurse with Doctors Without Borders, a French international medical humanitarian organization

Hani Majdalawi was one of about 200 of the organization's volunteers in the Gaza Strip, where it operates three burn and trauma centers. He was shot dead after opening fire and hurling grenades at IDF troops before attempting to infiltrate Israel..

The IDF Spokesman's Office said in a statement, "We have reached out to Doctors Without Borders for clarification regarding the matter."

Maj. Gen. Kamil Abu-Rukun, head of COGAT (Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories) asked on his Arabic-language Facebook page, "…how a man who was trained to save lives acquires a weapon to cut off lives?"

According to its website, Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) employs some 1,000 permanent staff who recruit about 3,000 doctors, nurses and other volunteers for its various projects.

In 2005, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr. Bernard Kouchner, the organization's founder.
