JERUSALEM, Israel - Syria's state news agency reported on Wednesday that Israel launched a missile attack on Iranian-backed military positions in Syria overnight.

State media reported that Israel struck Tel Haraa, a strategic zone in the Deraa province overlooking the Golan Heights. Russian forces used the area as an outpost for many years, but Iranian-backed militias later took it over, according to Reuters.

Syrian state news agency SANA said the only damages were material and mentioned Israel's attacks last month on targets near Damascus and Syria's Homs province.

The Syrian Observatory for Human rights, a UK based watchdog group, said at the time that Israel was targeting Iranian linked bases, including a base where Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were reportedly headquartered.

Reuters reports that last month's strikes were some of the largest Israeli missile attacks in the area in recent years. They came days after a historic trilateral meeting involving the national security advisors from Israel, Russia, and the United States.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the meeting that he would not allow Iran to entrench itself in Syria any further.
