North Korea's state-controlled newspaper is accusing the United States of planning an invasion while at the same time continuing negotiations "with a smile on its face."

The Rodong Sinmun newspaper claims the US carried out "extremely provocative and dangerous" military drills in the region.

"The US would be sadly mistaken if it thinks that it can browbeat someone through trite 'gunboat diplomacy' which it used to employ as an almighty weapon in the past," North Korean officials said.

A spokesperson for US Forces Japan told CBN News, it's "not aware of the drills" mentioned in North Korean media reports.

"In general, US aircrafts and ships operate from Japan every day in support of our commitments to our allies and partners in the region and in the interests of regional peace and security," the spokesperson said.

North Korean leaders could be lashing out after President Donald Trump stopped plans for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to make what would have been his fourth visit to North Korea, citing insufficient progress on the issue of denuclearization.

According to a release by State Department officials, North Korea's foreign minister and Pompeo spoke by phone to talk about where negotiations might go from here.

A release was also sent to CBN News, stating Pompeo and Japan's foreign minister spoke by phone to plan their next moves "with the goal of having a fully verified denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."
