House Fails to Override Veto to Defund Planned Parenthood

Republican lawmakers failed another attempt to repeal President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law Tuesday, which included ending federal funding of Planned Parenthood.

Tuesday's vote was an effort to override Obama's veto last month on a bill to gut Obamacare and end federal payments to the abortion giant.

Even before the scheduled vote, GOP lawmakers did not appear to have the necessary two-thirds majority to override a presidential veto. Yet, to many, like Rep. Robert Pittenger, R-N.C., the vote was symbolic.

Rep. Pittenger, R-N.C., told CBN News the vote gave conservatives an opportunity to draw a distinction between their priorities versus the priorities of the Democrats. Click play to listen to Rep. Pittenger's comments.

"We want to make it very clear to the American people where we stand and where the president stands. That's why we put this on his desk," he said. "We want them to know that we are standing for righteousness. We're standing for truth. We're standing for the lives of the unborn."

"And we're standing for a budget that is one that will bring accountability to our government and that's what we're about," he added.

Rep. Diane Black, R-Tenn., expressed her disappointment in the failed vote but said the effort has kept the spotlight on Planned Parenthood's questionable activities.

"While I am disappointed by today's failure to successfully override President Obama's veto, this was a fight worth having," she said.

"With this reconciliation effort, our Republican majority has kept the story of Planned Parenthood's brutalities alive, despite the mainstream media's best efforts," she said. "We've encouraged more Americans to watch the recent undercover films for themselves. What's more, we've finally put this President on record."

"As long as Obamacare is law and Planned Parenthood continues to be funded by American taxpayers to the tune of $1.5 million per day, there is work left to be done," she added. "I am in this fight for the long haul."
