President Donald Trump said he would 'love to see a shutdown' if Democrats refuse to back his immigration proposals.

"If we don't change the legislation, if we don't get rid of these loopholes where killers are allowed to come into our country and continue to kill ... if we don't change it, let's have a shutdown," Trump said Tuesday. "I'd love to see a shutdown if we don't get this stuff taken care of."

Trump made his remarks during a roundtable discussion at the White House with law enforcement officials and lawmakers on the threat of MS-13 gangs.

Congress is currently negotiating ways to prevent a looming government shutdown at midnight Thursday.

Trump has proposed steep cuts in legal immigration and increases in border security, including a southern border wall, in exchange for continued protection from deportation for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children and are living here illegally. Democrats have balked at Trump's proposals.

Disagreement over immigration forced a three-day government shutdown in January.
