Deadly storms have moved through the northeastern part of the United States, killing at least five people, including a child.

In central New York, four people were killed in the town of Smithfield when several homes were destroyed.

Residents are searching the community to make sure no one is trapped underneath collapsed homes.

In Marion, New York, people are calling their neighborhood a war zone.

"We were standing there. It started getting a little windy and then almost instantly, something was here," Marion resident Amanda Leonard recalled. "I'm still shaking from it. It was numbing, very numbing."

"It was insane. I looked out the window and just saw blankets of rain and trees falling everywhere," Lt. Joshua Nelson, with the East Palmyra Fire Department, said. "The rain came and then it was just over with, in a blink of an eye."

In Carroll County, Maryland, a tree fell at River Valley Ranch summer camp, killing one child and injuring six others. The children were reportedly trying to get back inside when the storm hit. They were hit by branches and other debris.

"Obviously it was pretty traumatic for the campers. But we got them all accounted for, took them to the lower part of our campus that did not sustain damage, and they're safe and doing well," Jon Bisset, the executive director at the summer camp, said.

Many residents have been left without power after the surprise storm downed power lines and trees.
