Court Blocks Utah's Move to Strip Planned Parenthood Funding

A federal appeals court has temporarily blocked Utah's attempt to cut off money to the state's Planned Parenthood chapter.

The decision by the Denver-based 10th Circuit Court of Appeals allows federal money to continue to flow to the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah while the court considers whether to order a longer hold.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert wants to end $275,000 in contracts with Planned Parenthood for sex education and testing for sexually transmitted diseases.

U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups ruled in favor of Utah's bid to cut off the money at the end of 2015, but the state Planned Parenthood branch appealed that decision.

Utah is one of a number of states that have moved to cut funding to the abortion giant.

Planned Parenthood has sued Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, and other states to stop the stripping of contracts and federal money, the Associated Press reports.

In most other states, judges have ruled in favor of Planned Parenthood, allowing funds to keep flowing while the court cases continue.
