Alabama's chief justice is standing his ground in opposition to gay marriage.

On Thursday, a federal judge ordered a Mobile County judge to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

But state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, unswayed, maintained his position that the federal judges' order is non-binding. He believes only the U.S. Supreme Court can force state judges to license gay marriage.

Alabama is the 37th state where gay marriage has been declared legal, in many cases by the order of a federal judge.
