MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Madison police say a 19-year-old black man has died after being shot by an officer.

Police Chief Mike Koval says the man was shot Friday after an altercation with the officer. Koval did not know if the man was armed.

Authorities didn't release the man's name, but family members identified him to local media as Tony Robinson.

Koval told the media that police were called because the man was jumping into traffic. He says the officer went to an apartment where the man had gone, then went inside after hearing a disturbance. Koval says the officer shot the man after the man assaulted the officer.

The state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
